Vergessene, marginalisierte und subversive Geschichten, die Berlin geprägt haben, verbunden mit ihren jeweiligen Orten und ergänzt durch spannende Bilder, Kurzfilme und Zeitzeugenberichte.
Neun Themen vermitteln den Spirit der App: Revolutionäres Berlin, Jüdisches Berlin, Frauen Berlins, Queeres Berlin, Postkoloniales Berlin, Nationalsozialismus: Widerstand & Erinnerung, DDR-Opposition, Migrationen und Urbane Pioniere.
People’s Berlin enthält bisher 65 ausführliche Einträge, die durch umfangreiche zeitgenössische und archivierte Fotos und Grafiken, Augenzeug:innenberichte, Kurzfilme, URLs und weiterführende Literatur ergänzt werden. People’s Berlin ist zweisprachig auf Deutsch und Englisch und richtet sich an lokale und internationale Nutzer:innen, egal wo sie sich gerade aufhalten, ob sie vor Ort in der Stadt unterwegs sind oder die Inhalte aus der Ferne erkunden.
Wir laden Euch ein auf dieser Reise durch die App mitzukommen, die historischen Schichten der Stadt zu entdecken, von den mittelalterlichen Anfängen bis zu gegenwärtigen Interventionen und zu lernen wie zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement die Stadt und das öffentliche Bewusstsein verändert haben.
Um auf die App zuzugreifen, lade bitte berlinHistory (kostenlos) aus dem App- bzw. Play-Store herunter und suche nach dem People’s Berlin-Symbol – dem bunten „P“ auf dem Banner oben – oder verwende den QR-Code unten. BerlinHistory beherbergt etwa 30 Apps; People’s Berlin ist die neueste Ergänzung. Oben auf der berlinHistory-Startseite befindet sich eine Kachel mit People’s Berlin. Tippe darauf oder tippe auf das bunte P in der Reihe der App-Symbole oben auf der Seite, um zu People’s Berlin zu gelangen. Tippe auf der Startseite von People’s Berlin auf die oberste Kachel mit dem Wandgemälde, um mehr über „Geschichte von unten“ zu erfahren. “Rewriting History – with an App”
We are excited to share with you a short YouTube video that will introduce you to the People’s Berlin App, a free digital guide to the alternative, subversive, forgotten, or erased stories, told at locations where people have used their power to shape the history and public space of Berlin from the bottom up. The filmmaker, Guy Dimenstein, was so taken with these inspiring stories that he featured the app in his YouTube video series, “Meet the Good Ones.” In this video, Guy guides viewers to selected places and stories where you will see eyewitnesses and visual reenactments animating groundbreaking events featured in the app. Here’s the link:

Why Berlin?
On the stage of history, few cities can match Berlin as a place where the power of kings, emperors and dictators has played out on a vast scale. But there is another side of this story. Over the centuries unsung ordinary people have raised their voices and flexed their muscle to challenge these systems of dominance. These are the stories of the people’s history, also called “history from below.” Inspired by the civic engagement of Berliners, whose Holocaust remembrance projects leveraged a profound reckoning with German responsibility for genocide, we – Kirsten Grimstad (Los Angeles) and Iris Wachsmuth (Berlin) – initiated this project to bring these stories to international audiences and to local Berliners alike. By focusing on the stories of “history from below,” this app reveals Berlin as it has not been seen before.
Nine color-coded themes guide users into the 65 entries on the map of the city: Women’s Berlin, Jewish Berlin, Revolutionary Berlin, Postcolonial Berlin, Migration, Queer Berlin, Nazi Terror, Resistance, Memory, East German Opposition, Urban Pioneering. Rare archival and contemporary photographs, graphics, eyewitness testimonies, short film interviews, and audio files enrich the texts in German and English.
These stories of history from below echo today as lodestars for people in the present. At a time when the threat to democracy is greater than ever, People’s Berlin lights the fire of civic action by championing the stories that energize this project. People’s Berlin is a call to action, intended to galvanize people – especially the young – to become agents of change themselves, to participate in shaping a just society, inspired by the courage of those whose stories you will discover in People’s Berlin.
Where to find the app
People’s Berlin is hosted on the berlinHistory app platform, accessible free of charge and ads on the App Store or Google Play. On the landing page, first choose your language on the settings menu, then look for the colorful P on the banner of themes across the top. – – -Click this “P” to find People’s Berlin.
